Our Constitution prohibits states from taking a poor person’s liberty in a criminal proceeding without first providing the defendant with an effective lawyer, yet the indigent accused in this country regularly go to court with no lawyer at all or with a financially conflicted lawyer who juggles far too many cases to provide competent representation.
