What are the ABCs of the Sixth?

Government policymakers want to know what the right to counsel means in practice. What does the U.S. constitution require about who gets a court-appointed lawyer when, and in what types of cases, in which courts (where), and why? These are the most common questions people ask us in our travels. Explore this deck of cards to find out!

Where Did We Get Our Answers

The answer to almost every question comes directly from U.S. Supreme Court case law and national standards on the Sixth Amendment right to counsel. These standards are produced by national organizations and include standards such as the American Bar Association Ten Principles of a Public Defense Delivery System and American Bar Association Standards for Criminal Justice: Providing Defense Services.
