6AC releases a new report after an evaluation of indigent defense services and feasibility study in Monroe County, Michigan, finding that the county lacks sufficient oversight of the quality of the representation and the necessary safeguards to ensure fiscal accountability. 6AC commends Monroe County leaders for requesting this timely and important study—since on July 24, 2026, Governor Whitmer signed SB081 into law, expanding Michigan Indigent Defense Commission (MIDC)’s duties to the indigent defense of youth.Read More

Oregon Supreme Court provides relief to unrepresented defendants
The Oregon Supreme Court ruled that the state violates a defendant’s right to counsel under the state constitution when it fails to appoint counsel for more than 60 consecutive days post-arraignment in a misdemeanor and 90 consecutive days in a felony. Emphasizing that the right to counsel is a “core component of our criminal justice system” that “serves as a check on governmental powers,” the ruling offers relief for thousands of indigent defendants across the state who have faced criminal charges without lawyers.Read More
